Oura, RingConn, Samsung and Ultrahuman: which ring tracks sleep and recovery most usefully – and which models work without a subscription?
Updated: 16 September 2026 · Reading time: approx. 18 minutes
Transparency: This editorial comparison is not our own laboratory or long-term test of all ten models. We assess publicly documented sensor data, app features, battery life, comfort, ongoing costs, platform compatibility, independent reviews and current availability. We have used individual rings in everyday life; these experiences are explicitly identified. Prices and availability may change at short notice.

The Oura Ring 5 is the best smart ring of 2026 for most people. It combines high comfort with the most mature app currently available, understandable sleep and recovery readings and a strong scientific foundation. Its biggest drawback remains the compulsory subscription for full analysis.
Anyone who wants no ongoing subscription gets the most balanced package with the RingConn Gen 2 – provided remaining stock is available from a reputable retailer. It lasts a very long time, is comfortably slim and provides many health and sleep trends without monthly charges. For Samsung Galaxy smartphone users, the Samsung Galaxy Ring is the most convenient ecosystem solution. The RingConn Gen 2 Air is our value pick, although it too was sold out at the manufacturer at the editorial cut-off.

¹ The RingConn Gen 3's current score is mainly reduced by the lack of independent long-term experience. Technically, it is one of the year's most interesting new releases.
A smart ring should not simply generate as many numbers as possible, but useful trends that are understandable and actionable in everyday life. Price is therefore not directly included in the FitRecover score. We show it separately so an expensive ring is not automatically rated higher.

FitRecover score: 93/100 · Price tier: €€€€ · Subscription: yes

Product image: Oura.
The Oura Ring 5 is our first choice because it offers the most balanced combination of the important features. According to the manufacturer, the fifth generation is around 40% smaller than its predecessor, weighs approximately 2–2.2 grams depending on size and feels much less noticeable on the finger. This matters particularly at night: a ring can gather good long-term data only if you actually wear it every night.
Oura combines more than 50 measurements and derived trends in an app that explains relationships rather than merely showing data. Sleep, daily readiness, stress, activity and longer-term changes are clearly presented. This is where Oura leads many technically interesting competitors.
Stated battery life is six to nine days. The ring is titanium and water-resistant to 100 metres. A size-specific standard charger is included; the portable charging case is sold separately. Full analysis requires membership after the free trial month. This ongoing cost must be included in your calculations before buying.
Strengths
Limitations
FitRecover verdict: The best all-rounder for users wanting the clearest possible view of sleep, recovery and general health patterns. Those fundamentally opposed to subscriptions should consider the RingConn Gen 2.

Product image: RingConn.
The RingConn Gen 2 remains a particularly sensible choice in 2026. It is around two millimetres thick, weighs approximately two to three grams depending on size and reaches up to twelve days of battery life according to the manufacturer. Its size-specific charging case extends use away from a power socket.
The app shows sleep, resting heart rate, HRV, temperature trends, activity, stress and recovery without compulsory membership. Indicators of possible sleep apnoea patterns are also included. Such indications are not medical findings and replace neither a sleep laboratory nor a medical diagnosis.
Independent long-term reviews report plausible sleep and health tracking and exceptionally long battery life. However, Oura remains ahead in presentation, coaching and long-term explanations. The German RingConn page marked the model as sold out at the editorial cut-off; Amazon and retailer stock may differ.
Strengths
Limitations
FitRecover verdict: The strongest purchase for people who want infrequent charging and no monthly fees – provided reputable remaining stock is available.

Product image: Samsung.
The Samsung Galaxy Ring is most useful with a current Galaxy smartphone and Samsung Health. It tracks sleep, heart rate, skin temperature and activity, combining data into the Energy Score. Existing Galaxy Watch users get a coherent shared system in which watch and ring can complement each other's measurements.
Depending on size, the ring weighs around 2.3–3.3 grams, has 10 ATM and IP68 protection and is claimed to last up to seven days. The transparent charging case is included. A recurring membership is currently unnecessary for basic health features.
The limitation is clear: iPhone users are excluded, and some gestures and Galaxy AI features require a compatible Galaxy device. Several customer reports on Samsung's German product page also describe sharply reduced or failed batteries. This small, self-selected review group does not prove a general manufacturing defect, but is a relevant warning for an expensive wearable. Choose the warranty, return period and retailer deliberately.
Strengths
Limitations
FitRecover verdict: More convenient than a standalone solution for Galaxy users. Unsuitable for iPhone users; RingConn remains the better platform-independent subscription-free choice.

Product image: RingConn.
The RingConn Gen 2 Air retains the brand's main strengths: a slim body, long battery life, an app without compulsory membership and tracking of core sleep and recovery metrics. According to the manufacturer, it lasts up to ten days and takes around 90 minutes to charge fully.
Features are reduced compared with the standard Gen 2. In particular, analysis of possible sleep apnoea patterns is absent. The Air is usually significantly cheaper in return. Availability can vary by market and ring size; it was sold out on the manufacturer page at the editorial cut-off.
Strengths
Limitations
FitRecover verdict: The most sensible affordable introduction, provided your size is available. The standard Gen 2 is worthwhile if a charging case and extended sleep analysis matter.

Product image: Oura.
The Oura Ring 4 Ceramic combines Oura's strong app with a zirconia ceramic exterior that appears scratch-resistant. The material and colours look more like jewellery than a conventional fitness tracker. Titanium remains on the inside.
The downside of ceramic is greater weight: depending on size, the ring weighs around 5.1–8.1 grams and is noticeably thicker at 3.51 mm than Oura Ring 5 or RingConn Gen 2. Manufacturer-stated battery life is five to eight days. Oura membership is required here too for full analysis.
Strengths
Limitations
FitRecover verdict: A style choice, not a value recommendation. Those prioritising comfort are better served by the Oura Ring 5.

Product image: RingConn.
The RingConn Gen 3 is technically one of the most exciting rings of 2026. It is claimed to last up to 14 days and delivers vibration alerts for movement, selected health events and low battery directly to your finger. The universal charging case works regardless of ring size, and the app remains free of compulsory subscriptions.
At 2.3 mm thick and around 2.5–3.5 grams, the ring stays compact despite its vibration motor. Vascular-health trends are also new. These are wellness information, not a medical diagnosis.
Why does it not rank higher? Reliable long-term experience with battery life, vibration motor and measurement quality is still lacking. It was also sold out on the German manufacturer page at the editorial cut-off. Specifications do not replace a months-long hands-on test. The score accounts for this uncertainty. A much higher ranking is possible if independent tests confirm its promises and availability becomes stable.
Strengths
Limitations
FitRecover verdict: A very promising purchase for early adopters, but not yet as well-supported a default recommendation as Gen 2. Check delivery date and return rights before ordering.

FitRecover score: 77/100 · Price tier: €€€ · Subscription: no for core data

Product image: Ultrahuman.
The Ultrahuman Ring AIR strongly targets users who want to view sleep, recovery, movement and metabolic habits together. Its app provides dynamic recommendations and optional PowerPlugs. Basic personal data does not require an ongoing subscription.
The titanium ring weighs around 2.4 grams, is approximately 2.4 mm thick and is water-resistant to 100 metres. Official battery life is four to six days; a full charge takes around three hours. Ultrahuman itself states that capacity can gradually decline after one to two years and cites approximately 500 charge cycles before substantial ageing.
Editorial experience: The battery in our Ring AIR failed; a replacement is in progress. One device does not prove a general manufacturing defect. However, it aligns with independent long-term reports of battery problems and is therefore a legitimate reliability caveat. Positively, a replacement process has been initiated.
Strengths
Limitations
FitRecover verdict: Interesting in its approach, but buy only with deliberate attention to battery, warranty and returns. RingConn Gen 2 is currently the lower-risk subscription-free recommendation.

Product image: Amazfit.
The Amazfit Helio Ring is particularly interesting for existing Amazfit watch and Zepp app users. Sleep, recovery and training data feed into one system, allowing ring and watch to complement each other. Amazfit provides Zepp Aura features to ring users without additional membership.
The titanium ring tracks heart rate, HRV, SpO₂, stress and electrodermal activity, among other metrics. Its biggest weaknesses are short battery life of up to four days and a very limited choice of only three ring sizes. People between sizes may not find a reliable fit.
Strengths
Limitations
FitRecover verdict: An ecosystem recommendation, not a universal winner. Particularly useful for existing Amazfit users.

FitRecover score: 70/100 · Price tier: €€€ · Subscription: no for basic features

Product image: Circular.
The Circular Ring 2 combines conventional sleep and recovery data with a haptic alarm, ECG functionality and blood-pressure-related trends after calibration using a cuff. On paper, this is unusually extensive. According to the manufacturer, the titanium ring lasts up to eight days and works with iOS and Android.
Its prominent health features particularly require caution. Circular itself states that the ring must not be used diagnostically and replaces neither a medical ECG nor a blood pressure cuff. There is less independent evidence for current features, support and long-term reliability than for Oura, Samsung or RingConn.
Strengths
Limitations
FitRecover verdict: Interesting for buyers willing to experiment, but not our first recommendation for dependable health and sleep trends.

Product image: Luna.
The Luna Ring Gen 2 offers sleep, activity and recovery data without recurring fees. According to the supplier, battery life is four to seven days; an optional or bundle-dependent charging case can considerably extend use away from home. Voice features also enable entries and queries.
For German buyers, the main disadvantage is not an individual sensor but the overall combination of availability, support and independent assessment. Luna is less widespread, and current comparative data is thinner than for major competitors. Check returns, customs, warranty handling and app compatibility carefully before buying.
Strengths
Limitations
FitRecover verdict: An interesting niche alternative, but RingConn currently offers German buyers the more dependable subscription-free overall package.

Product image: Ultrahuman.
The new Ultrahuman Ring PRO sounds spectacular with up to 15 days of battery life, a new heart rate sensor system, 250 days of storage in the ring and a case providing up to 45 additional days of power. Core data is intended to remain free of compulsory subscriptions.
Nevertheless, a leading position would be premature: according to official ordering information, device and sizing-kit shipments begin only on 20 September 2026, after this comparison's editorial cut-off. Independent long-term reviews and real experience of battery stability are still lacking. The ring will be reassessed in the next update.
Always order the original sizing kit first and wear the sample ring for at least 24 hours – preferably two or three days. Finger size changes with heat, sleep, exercise, salt and fluids. A loose ring creates data gaps; a tight ring becomes uncomfortable at night.
The index, middle or ring finger usually makes sense for optical sensors. What matters is that the sensor side stays correctly aligned and the ring does not rotate freely.
An apparently affordable purchase may become more expensive over time with monthly membership. Oura offers the most complete app but requires a subscription after the trial month. RingConn, Samsung, Amazfit and Luna provide core data without compulsory membership. Ultrahuman and Circular may charge for optional extras.
SpO₂ readings, frequent synchronisation, vibration alerts, cold temperatures and battery age can reduce runtime. A ring offering up to seven days will not necessarily last a full week in everyday use. More important than the maximum is whether charging fits your routine – perhaps while showering or at your desk.
Smart rings are particularly good for sleep, resting heart rate, HRV, temperature trends and passive everyday data. For pace, maps, intervals, live heart rate and precise training control, a sports watch is usually better. None of the health rings recommended here has full GPS.
Metal rings and heavy dumbbells are not a good combination. Pressure can injure the finger, and knurling scratches the surface. Ultrahuman explicitly warns against heavy strength training with a ring in its FAQ. A watch or chest strap is a better choice for these sessions.
Even when apps use terms such as vascular health, sleep apnoea, ECG or blood pressure, a consumer ring does not replace a medical examination. Unusual or repeatedly poor readings are a reason to seek professional help – not self-diagnose.
| Smart Ring | Fitness watch |
|---|---|
| discreet and usually more comfortable at night | display and live training data |
| strong for sleep and passive trends | usually GPS, training profiles and navigation |
| often several days to two weeks of battery life | one day to several weeks, depending on model |
| no distracting display | notifications, music and apps |
| often unsuitable for strength training | easier to remove or usable on the upper arm |
A combination can also be the best solution: ring at night and during everyday life, sports watch only for training. First check whether both systems exchange data cleanly through Apple Health, Health Connect, Samsung Health or their manufacturer apps.
The Oura Ring 5 is our overall winner for 2026. It offers the most mature combination of comfort, sleep analysis and understandable app. Without a subscription, we recommend the RingConn Gen 2.
RingConn Gen 2, RingConn Gen 2 Air, RingConn Gen 3, Samsung Galaxy Ring, Amazfit Helio Ring and Luna Ring Gen 2 provide core data without compulsory membership. Ultrahuman also requires no subscription for basic personal data, but offers optional paid extensions.
The health rings compared here have no display. Readings appear in the smartphone app. RingConn Gen 3 and Circular Ring 2 can provide vibration alerts. NFC payment rings without health sensors are a different product category.
Some manufacturers show blood-pressure-related trends or experimental estimates. For medical decisions, continue to use a validated upper-arm cuff. A ring does not replace a diagnosis.
Many models are water-resistant to 50 or 100 metres, but exact limits differ. Soap, hot saunas, salt water and damaged seals can increase stress on the device. Before swimming, always follow current manufacturer guidance for the exact model.
Index and middle fingers often provide a stable fit; the ring finger can also work. More important than the finger's name is a fit tight enough for constant skin contact without pressure or restricted circulation.
Yes for sleep, recovery and passive load trends. For precise live data, GPS and structured training, a good sports watch or chest strap is usually superior.
In 2026, the market is more clearly divided than ever: Oura Ring 5 delivers the best overall product if a subscription is acceptable. RingConn Gen 2 is the most convincing alternative without recurring costs, Samsung Galaxy Ring is the logical Galaxy ecosystem choice, and RingConn Gen 2 Air is the best affordable introduction.
New models such as RingConn Gen 3 and Ultrahuman Ring PRO show where the category is heading: longer battery life, charging cases and discreet vibration alerts. With brand-new hardware, however, specifications are not everything. Availability, battery longevity, app maturity and support determine only after months whether a ring is genuinely good.
