A rowing machine needs to fit your everyday life

A suitable rower makes regular training more accessible: no journey to the gym and less dependence on the weather. Whether you still use it after three months often depends on practical details. Does a full stroke fit between the sofa and wall? Can you read the monitor? Are you willing to maintain a tank? Can you actually store the machine as easily as you expect?

This comparison ranks ten specific home rowers for regular training. Our overall choice is the Concept2 RowErg with PM5. The Skandika Nemo IV is a strong water option with its own display. The manual MERACH Q1S is worth considering for a simple start. Your room and body measurements can change the best personal order.

The selection covers sliding-seat machines with air, water or magnetic resistance. Strength cable stations are a different category. A rower can support endurance training; it does not replace systematic strength work or appropriate movement technique.

How we determined the order

This is a source-based editorial comparison, not our own hands-on test or an Amazon bestseller chart. Model specifications come from the linked manufacturer material. The Amazon links point to specific product pages. Availability, the selected variant and delivery conditions can change.

We prioritise five areas: training usefulness and understandable data; physical fit and operating space; usable controls without unnecessary dependencies; storage and care; and clear documentation and service. These criteria support a reasoned order, rather than fabricated laboratory scores. Contradictory load limits or overlapping generation names reduce our confidence.

A higher position does not make a machine the best fit for everyone. A 159.5 cm magnetic rower may suit a small flat better than a more thoroughly documented 244 cm air machine. Lower places can reflect narrower suitability or greater uncertainty rather than inherently poor products.

Limited space: separate frame size from exercise space

The shortest machines save operating length, but only help if the seat and handle travel fit your body. Consider the movement direction, access and elbow clearance before ordering. Upright storage still needs enough height, stability and a clear transport route.

10

For minimal operating length without a power cable

MAXXUS RX 1.0

MAXXUS RX 1.0 – Magnetic · 32 settings

The RX 1.0 is the shortest machine by operating length in this selection. Self-powered operation is useful when there is no convenient mains socket.

System

Dimensions (L × W × H)
159.5 × 51.5 × 59 cm
User limits
125 kg; recommended height 150–190 cm
Storage
Upright storage

Thirty-two magnetic settings and a multifunction dial reduce the need for a large console. The manufacturer describes power generated during rowing. The practical advantage is flexible positioning, rather than proof of a particular energy saving or better training performance.

The narrower target group is the main compromise. MAXXUS specifies a 125 kg user limit and a 150–190 cm height range. This can suit shorter and medium-height adults. Long legs should not be accommodated by shortening the stroke or hitting the end stop. External length alone cannot establish a comfortable full stroke.

The concept makes sense for occasional sessions and accessible movement breaks. It finishes lower overall because its user envelope is narrower and independent measurement evidence is limited. Within those boundaries, someone who values short operating length more than performance data may still find it the best personal match.

Who is it for? Small rooms and users within the documented height and load limits.

Less suitable: Very tall or heavy users and training plans requiring precise performance data.

+ Strengths

  • Very short operating frame
  • Self-powered use without a mains cable
  • Rotary controls, Bluetooth and upright storage

− Limitations

  • 125 kg user limit
  • Height recommendation ends at 190 cm
  • No verified independent precision or long-term test

Why position 10? A useful small-space niche, limited in a general ranking by its narrower user envelope.

9

For a short frame and rotary controls

Sportstech PROwer · Black

Sportstech PROwer · Black – Magnetic · 32 settings

Dimensions (L × W × H)
161.8 × 47.5 × 62.5 cm
User limits
120/150 kg conflict; conservative reference 120 kg
Storage
Upright; specifically not foldable

A short frame is convenient, but it cannot replace checking the usable seat travel. Smaller is not automatically better for tall people. The technical specifications also explicitly say the frame is not foldable, despite folding language elsewhere. Treat it as upright storage, not a folding machine.

Published user-load limits conflict too: technical data say 120 kg, while some sales sections say 150 kg. We use the lower figure until the exact manual or written confirmation resolves this. Data quality is a material reason for ninth place, not a minor footnote.

Sportstech Live membership is offered separately. Budget for it only if you want the content, and confirm the basic functions available without membership. We do not treat an advertised noise figure as a comparative measurement without matching distance, floor and training intensity.

Who is it for? Space-conscious users comfortably below the conservative load limit.

Less suitable: High user loads or a strict requirement for folding storage.

+ Strengths

  • Short operating length
  • Rotary display and 32 resistance settings
  • Transport wheels and upright storage

− Limitations

  • Conflicting manufacturer load figures
  • Upright storage rather than folding
  • Optional training platform can add recurring costs

Why position 9? Its compact construction is useful, but contradictory technical information limits our recommendation.

Starter machines: basic function comes before the app

A sustainable start requires a suitable position, understandable display and resistance that allows controlled movement. A large number of settings is not a cross-brand quality measure. Bluetooth is an addition; first establish what works without a login, internet connection or recurring membership.

For conventional magnetic training with a folding rail

SportPlus SP-MR-1300 · Black/Sun

SportPlus SP-MR-1300 · Black/Sun – Magnetic · settings depend on generation
Product photograph: SportPlus.

The SP-MR-1300 is a conventional home-rower family with manual magnetic resistance and its own display. Familiar controls are its main attraction.

Dimensions (L × W × H)
Family approximately 205 × 48 × 73 cm
User limits
Family up to 150 kg / 200 cm; verify exact version

Folding rail

The current manufacturer page describes a 16-setting SP-MR-1300-iE, while older product images and the established Black/Sun version describe eight settings. These differences matter. We therefore do not advertise every linked SP-MR-1300 as a 16-setting machine. Bluetooth should also be assumed only when the exact offer specifies it.

For easy regular sessions, readable controls can matter more than an extra app. Folding the rail helps with storage, though the operating length exceeds the RX 1.0 or PROwer. If you move it after every session, consider its weight, handholds and locking mechanism as well.

The family deserves consideration when conventional construction and identifiable replacement parts are priorities. Generation changes keep it below more clearly identified alternatives.

Who is it for? Basic home training with a conventional display and folding storage.

Less suitable: When you need a precisely defined app or resistance specification without checking the generation.

+ Strengths

  • Conventional built-in display
  • Folding rail
  • Manufacturer maintains model-specific spare-part categories

− Limitations

  • Similar names for eight- and 16-setting generations
  • Connected features differ by version
  • Long frame despite reduced storage footprint

Why position 8? A useful underlying concept, placed cautiously because of the overlapping generations.

Our choice for a straightforward start

MERACH Q1S · manual

MERACH Q1S · manual – Magnetic · 16 settings

Storage
Upright storage

Sixteen settings help you find a suitable personal range. For a beginner, a stable position, controlled leg extension and a natural handle path matter more. A machine that supports this movement with simple controls can be more useful than a huge app library.

Model separation is essential. Manual and electromagnetic Q1S versions appear under similar names in different markets. Automatic load changes, self-generation and screen specifications do not apply to every Q1S. Pro features do not automatically apply to the basic model.

The photograph comes from the manual manufacturer family; the phone and user illustrate use. Dual rails are a construction feature rather than our own stability test. Its straightforward function makes sense as an entry recommendation. Strong interval training or an established measurement standard calls for a different selection priority.

Who is it for? Beginners and uncomplicated steady sessions without competition-data requirements.

Less suitable: When you expect automatic resistance or the features of a different Q1S version.

+ Strengths

  • Simple manual magnetic settings
  • Dual rails and upright storage
  • Optional app support

− Limitations

  • Many similarly named Q1S generations
  • No verified shared watt standard across brands
  • Exact user limits must match the linked version

Why position 7? A sensible basic concept, limited by variant confusion and less extensive measurement evidence.

Living-room training: water and magnetic resistance solve different problems

Water machines provide a distinctive flowing sound and often a wooden frame. Magnetic machines avoid tank care and can be acoustically less intrusive. A fair assessment also considers seat rollers and floor vibration. Incompatible manufacturer noise figures cannot establish a reliable ranking.

6

The folding beechwood water alternative

MAXXUS HWR 700

MAXXUS HWR 700 – Water

The HWR 700 focuses on a wooden appearance, water resistance and a genuinely folding frame. Its published wood specification is beech, not oak.

User limits

Folds to 76 × 51.5 × 104 cm

The folded dimensions distinguish it from machines that only stand vertically. If you must clear the room after every workout, the storage routine deserves more weight than tank styling. Still follow the instructions for filling, locking and moving it: small quoted storage dimensions do not guarantee an effortless routine.

A separate monitor supports basic use without keeping a tablet open. Bluetooth and the listed iConsole+ and Kinomap options can add variety. A watt readout is not equivalent to independent accuracy verification. Personal session logs may be useful; comparing rankings across different brands would be a different matter.

The recommended height range ends at 195 cm, a fit boundary rather than an automatic quality defect. This rower sits ahead of the shortest starter options because water resistance, independent data and folding storage make a coherent package. Precision performance testing would lead us to different priorities.

Who is it for? Living-room water training where folding storage is important.

Less suitable: Very tall users or people expecting directly comparable performance across brands.

+ Strengths

  • Beechwood construction and water resistance
  • Standalone workout monitor
  • Published folded dimensions and 150 kg load class

− Limitations

  • Tank care and careful folding routine
  • Height recommendation ends at 195 cm
  • No verified independent power calibration

Why position 6? A coherent storage-and-training combination, with less established measurement precision than the leading machine.

For easier access and varied magnetic training

Skandika Freki Plus · 24 settings

Skandika Freki Plus · 24 settings – Magnetic · 24 settings
Product photograph: Skandika. Extra devices illustrate use; check the actual included equipment.

The Freki Plus SF-4050 combines a raised access position with electronically controlled magnetic resistance. Our selection is the blue-grey version with 24 settings, 19 programmes and a 12 kg flywheel mass system.

System
Magnetic · 24 settings
Dimensions (L × W × H)
177 × 52 × 108 cm
User limits
135 kg; user height up to 200 cm
Storage
Upright storage; machine weight 43.6 kg

At 177 cm long, Freki Plus needs less operating length than the large air and hybrid machines. The raised rail may make getting on and off easier. Its 43.6 kg weight matters if you move it regularly: transport wheels and upright storage help, but this is still a substantial machine. A level floor and a clear route to the storage position deserve attention when choosing where to train.

The training computer controls 24 resistance settings electronically. Together with 19 programmes, this offers more variety than a basic manual dial. Setting counts do not establish comparable pulling force across brands, and a 12 kg flywheel mass system is not a maximum strength-training load. The manufacturer specifies a 135 kg user limit and a maximum height of 200 cm. Seat travel and handle position still need to suit your proportions.

The additional leg-press function is an unusual extra: after the prescribed conversion, the pull cable attaches to the seat. It expands the available movements, but cannot replace a heavy strength machine with defined added weights. The LCD, Bluetooth and Kinomap connection support endurance training; the tablet, television, chest strap and optional resistance bands should be considered separately. We lack an independently confirmed measurement standard for competition data, which keeps Freki Plus below the leading conventional rowing options.

Who is it for? Varied home endurance training where raised access and electronic magnetic programmes matter.

Less suitable: When low machine weight or directly comparable competition data are priorities.

+ Strengths

  • 24 electronic settings and 19 programmes
  • Raised rail, standalone LCD and leg-press function
  • 177 cm operating length and upright storage

− Limitations

  • A substantial 43.6 kg to move
  • Leg-press function cannot replace heavy strength equipment
  • No verified independent power calibration

Why position 5? A shorter frame and versatile controls suit home training; weight and less established performance data limit its overall position.

Programmes and hybrid resistance: more options, more trade-offs

Electronic load selection can make repeatable changes convenient. A hybrid adds one resistance system to another. Either feature only helps if you actually use it. Consider mains power, display position and access to the controls alongside the headline specification.

4

The air-and-magnetic alternative

JOROTO MR60

JOROTO MR60 – Air + magnetic
Product photograph: JOROTO. Extra devices illustrate use; check the actual included equipment.

The MR60 combines pull-dependent air resistance with ten manually selected magnetic settings. It targets people who want more adjustment options than on a basic air rower.

242 × 47 × 88 cm
User limits
150 kg
Storage
Folds to 120 × 47 × 168.5 cm

Two systems do not automatically create twice the training value. What matters is a consistent stroke that suits your technique. The magnetic selector supplements the fan; it does not turn the MR60 into an electronically watt-controlled ergometer. Record your own settings alongside each session if you follow a recurring plan.

JOROTO specifies a standalone monitor and Bluetooth for Kinomap or SPAX. A tablet in a promotional picture is additional hardware. We have not verified long-term app reliability or actual watt accuracy through our own use, which helps explain the gap to the Concept2 system.

The 242 cm frame needs almost as much exercise space as a RowErg. Folded height remains 168.5 cm. This is reduced storage floor area rather than a genuinely small machine. Its 38 kg weight also makes the route to the storage spot part of the buying decision.

Who is it for? A dedicated training room and users interested in a manually adjustable hybrid system.

Less suitable: When short operating length or a particularly simple training ecosystem matters most.

+ Strengths

  • Air resistance plus ten manual magnetic settings
  • Standalone monitor with optional connected training
  • Published operating and folded dimensions

− Limitations

  • Very long exercise position
  • Heavy frame and tall folded profile
  • No verified independent power-accuracy or long-term app assessment

Why position 4? A useful technical alternative, tempered by its large frame and less established measurement evidence.

For programmes and electronic magnetic settings

HAMMER Cobra XTR Plus II

HAMMER Cobra XTR Plus II – Magnetic

The Cobra suits people who prefer a conventional training monitor and built-in programmes. It avoids water-tank care, though it still occupies a considerable amount of space.

232 × 55 × 75 cm
User limits
130 kg · manufacturer platform 4532
Storage
Folds to 118 × 55 × 155 cm

HAMMER calls the current platform Cobra XTR Plus, item 4532, while the Amazon association uses Plus II. This naming difference matters: confirm the 4532 configuration before transferring older programme or app claims to an offer.

The current platform documents 16 computer-controlled resistance levels and a backlit LCD. Their practical value is convenient, repeatable load selection. They do not correspond to the same pulling forces as settings on a Freki or MERACH. A watt readout is also not proof of calibrated power measurement.

At 232 cm long and 37 kg, the Cobra is a full-sized training station. Its folded height is 155 cm, which rules out low cupboards. HAMMER advises against this platform for a 202 cm user. Very tall people should therefore consider a more suitable rail configuration.

Who is it for? Beginners and regular exercisers with room for a programme-driven machine.

Less suitable: Very tall users, cramped rooms or a requirement for operation without mains power.

+ Strengths

  • Backlit training display
  • Electronic load selection and programmes
  • No tank; published folded dimensions

− Limitations

  • Long frame and mains connection
  • 130 kg limit on the current manufacturer platform
  • Plus versus Plus II naming needs a variant check

Why position 3? Controls and programmes support a high position, while its size and naming variation limit a universal recommendation.

Long-term training: monitor, fit and serviceability

As your routine develops, understandable data and reliable support become more valuable. Check whether rollers, foot straps and drive parts can be identified for the exact model. Clear documentation is more useful than a long list of large promotional promises.

Upright storage according to manufacturer

Its angled tank defines the construction. Six advertised settings refer to water-fill levels, rather than electronic resistance buttons you can change instantly during intervals. Your pulling effort also affects resistance. This suits steady endurance work; frequent precisely selected load changes are less convenient.

The LCD matters more in everyday use than a temporary app promotion. Basic values remain available without a separate tablet. Kinomap can add virtual routes, but the manufacturer gives inconsistent trial durations, so we promise no particular free period. The television shown in the promotional photograph is not part of the rower.

The stated height recommendation of up to 200 cm makes the Nemo IV worth considering for taller users. It still needs a fit check because leg length and mobility differ. Upright storage saves storage area but does not remove tank maintenance or the effort of moving a substantial machine.

Who is it for? Water-rowing enthusiasts who want an integrated monitor for regular sessions.

Less suitable: When minimal maintenance or frequent electronic load changes are essential.

+ Strengths

  • Basic LCD data without a compulsory smartphone
  • Published 150 kg load and 200 cm height recommendation
  • Transport wheels and upright storage

− Limitations

  • Water filling rather than instant electronic load selection
  • Tank maintenance
  • Audible water and a substantial frame

Why position 2? Water resistance, documented ergonomics and a usable standalone monitor form a practical combination.

Our choice for structured training

Concept2 RowErg · PM5

User limits
227 kg manufacturer test; 135 kg under EN 20957-7

Separates into two pieces

The main advantage is the training system. Time, 500-metre pace and stroke rate make it easier to repeat a session under comparable conditions. A video subscription or large screen is unnecessary. People who also row at a gym benefit from a familiar data format. This explains our first place for performance-focused home training.

The damper changes airflow and the feel of the stroke. It is not a weight selector like the stack on a strength machine. A high setting cannot replace sound technique or a sensible plan. For occasional ten-minute sessions, a simpler machine may already meet your needs.

Space and noise are the trade-offs. Concept2 recommends a 274 × 122 cm exercise area. A floor mat will not turn an audible fan into a quiet magnetic rower. The manufacturer also distinguishes its own 227 kg load test from the 135 kg figure under the European standard; these are different claims.

Who is it for? Regular endurance sessions, interval plans and meaningful use of training data.

Less suitable: When very low noise or minimal floor space comes first.

+ Strengths

  • Standalone PM5 with no compulsory training subscription
  • Published maintenance, spare-parts and space information
  • Two-piece storage; no mains connection required for rowing

− Limitations

  • Audible fan during powerful strokes
  • Large exercise area
  • Standard legs give a comparatively low 36 cm seat

Why position 1? A transparent training and service system matters more here than entertainment screens or the number of resistance settings.

Buying advice: seven decisions before ordering

1. Measure training and storage space separately

Record usable floor length, width and storage height. The machine dimensions alone are insufficient: your body, elbows and access need additional space. Concept2 recommends a 274 × 122 cm exercise area for the RowErg. Consider doors and whether you will realistically move the full machine after every workout.

2. Body measurements before resistance counts

Height and leg length are different. Check the recommended user size for the exact version and whether the seat can travel without hitting an end stop. When published limits conflict, the larger number does not resolve the issue. Use the exact manual and written clarification for that machine.

3. Match resistance to your planned training

Air: resistance responds to your pull and the fan is audible. Water: the stroke depends on moving water and effort; base adjustment often requires changing fill level. Magnetic: load is selected in machine-specific settings. Hybrid: combines systems. No category is automatically superior for every person.

4. Think about sound in your own room

You may find water soothing while someone else finds it intrusive. Vibration can also travel through the floor. A suitable floor mat protects the surface and may affect vibration; it cannot guarantee silence for neighbours. Decibel figures are comparable only when the measurement conditions match.

5. Budget realistically for software and accessories

Check the basic display without membership, free app functions and possible ongoing costs. A limited Kinomap trial is not a permanently free plan. Phones, tablets, televisions and chest straps shown in promotional photographs are included only when the exact offer explicitly says so.

6. Separate maintenance from repairs

A magnetic brake needs no water tank, but rollers, bolts and drive belts remain mechanical components. Water machines need care according to the manual; air rowers also need cleaning. Clear spare-part numbers and accessible instructions are more useful than a blanket claim of maintenance-free operation.

7. Read the actual Amazon offer

Match the model name, generation, colour, new condition and included accessories. Check the seller, delivery to Germany, total cost and return arrangements for a heavy machine. A product page can contain multiple offers and variants. The current Amazon order summary determines the purchase; opening a link reserves no stock.

Air, water and magnetic resistance in everyday use

SystemParticularly relevant forMain compromise
AirStructured, effort-dependent loadingAudible fan; often a long frame
WaterFlowing stroke and water soundTank care; adjustment often by filling
MagneticSimple settings and home useDifferent brands’ settings and watt values are not interchangeable
Air + magneticAdditional mechanical adjustmentMore mechanisms do not establish greater accuracy

Your first fit check: five things that need to work

  1. You can get on and off the seat in control.
  2. At the front, your shoulders remain relaxed and your shins approximately vertical without forcing the position.
  3. The seat does not hit the end stop during leg extension.
  4. You can bring the handle towards the lower ribs without sharply bending your wrists.
  5. You can read the display while rowing, and a mounted tablet does not obstruct the stroke.

The basic drive sequence is legs → body → arms; recovery reverses it: arms → body → legs. Learn the movement with low to moderate effort first. High resistance cannot replace control. Stop if you experience pain and address the cause.

For the full movement guide, see the FitRecover training articles. The original rowing technique and 20-minute guide is available in German.

Questions answered

What is our overall recommendation?

The Concept2 RowErg with PM5 when regular training and understandable performance data come first. A small room or a preference for water resistance can change the best personal choice.

Which models suit a small flat?

The RX 1.0 and PROwer have particularly short external lengths. Still check seat travel, user limits and safe storage. Freki adds a raised access position as another practical distinction.

Which rower is the quietest?

We do not have comparable noise measurements for all ten machines under identical conditions. Magnetic rowers avoid fan and water sounds, but rollers and floor vibration remain relevant.

Are 32 resistance levels better than ten?

Not automatically. Settings apply within a specific machine. They establish neither higher maximum pulling force nor more accurate performance data or a better stroke.

Do I need a subscription?

Not for the basic rowing movement. Available display and workout functions depend on the model. Treat limited trials and paid video platforms separately from the underlying machine.

Why are prices and Amazon stars omitted?

Offers and reviews change and may combine several variants. We focus on construction, fit and specific model identification. The current total price is shown directly on Amazon.de.

Why are some premium names absent?

This selection focuses on documented, specific Amazon.de product associations. A technically interesting rower does not enter the list on brand recognition alone.

Are these positions our own test results?

No. They are editorial conclusions based on published features and practical buying criteria. We claim no own noise testing, power calibration or long-term trials.

Which rowing machine would we choose?

For a long-term structured programme, the Concept2 RowErg remains our first choice. For water resistance with a display on the machine, look closely at the Nemo IV. For a straightforward start without advanced performance requirements, the manual MERACH Q1S is a useful category recommendation.

Limited space changes the decision. Freki offers raised access, the HWR 700 combines water resistance with genuine folding storage, and the RX 1.0 has a particularly short frame. Choose for fit and location first, then monitor and resistance type. The right machine lets you complete a controlled full stroke regularly.
